The body of the Japanese turtle is roughly brown, the color of the head is slightly lighter than the body color, and there are black spots on both sides of the head and around the neck little freckles. Only one ridge can be seen, and a light yellow stripe can be seen where the ridge is protruding, which may not be the case in some turtles. The back edge of the carapace is serrated. The back also has a novel pattern produced by scattered water channels. The back length of an adult Japanese tortoise is about 13cm~18cm. Its body is gray to yellow, with chrysanthemum and dark orange stripes on its arms, legs and tail. This turtle is larger than the male, but the male has a longer tail.
The carapace of the Japanese turtle can grow up to about 17 centimeters, and the carapace has brightly colored markings. The edge of the dorsal surface is jagged, the carapace is reddish-brown, with dark markings, and there is a hinge between the carapace and the plastron; the plastron is black or dark brown, and the color of the edge of the plastron is yellow. The sharp hook at the front of the upper jaw allows them to catch prey quickly and easily and taste food vigorously. There are also reddish-brown dotted lines on the head, neck, hands and feet. After hatchlings hatch, the length of their carapace can reach 3.5 to 3.6 centimeters.
